The Ould like and the Grasshopper Essay

In Somerset Maugham brief story " The ish and the Grasshopper" we are introduced to the two primary characters because referring to these people as George and Ben. The character types are presented after a brief introduction about the story in the ant plus the grasshopper. In this fable we learn the ant in the story is a lot like the character of George. The ant starts working apart throughout the summer time collecting his food and building his shelter to be able to prepare for the upcoming winter. The Grasshopper on the other hand enjoys his summertime by " sitting on the blade of grass singing to the sun" (Maugham 288). The characteristics in the grasshopper are also seen through the character of Tom. George is considered " hardworking, reasonable, respectable, and straightforward" (Maugham 291), although Tom is usually portrayed since an idle, worthless, dissolute, and low rogue" (Maugham 291). We can not support but think drawn to understand George's character because over the story George is seen to be the individual that has worked for everything he offers. We see evidence of this when the narrator claims, " Poor George, just a year more mature then his scapegrace close friend, looked 59. He had hardly ever taken even more then a fortnight's holiday in the entire year for a 1 / 4 of a hundred years. He was in his office every morning by nine 30 and never still left it till six. Having been honest, industrious, and deserving. He made a point of conserving a third of his profits and his program was to retire at fifty-five to a small house inside the countryВ… (Maugham 290). Maugham uses this kind of character to portray the most liked life that people as human beings try to live each day. By simply going to work and supporting a family were much like the ish in the account living every day in order to make ourselves for future years.
